Blending In: Lowering Your Visual Profile in Busy Places
Simple choices about clothes, valuables and how you move that help you look less like a first-day tourist in crowded places.
In crowded markets and transport hubs, the people looking for an easy target tend to look for the same signals: someone lost, distracted, or carrying obvious valuables. Lowering those signals is mostly about small habits.
What you wear
- Look at what local women your age are wearing and dress somewhere near that. Muted colours draw less attention than bright tourist wear.
- Respect local dress norms, especially at religious sites. A light scarf is useful almost everywhere.
- Leave expensive-looking jewellery at home.
What you carry
- A cross-body bag worn in front, closed, is harder to snatch than a shoulder bag or a back pocket.
- Carry only the cash and cards you need for the day; keep a backup card separately.
- Put your phone away between uses rather than walking with it in your hand.
How you move
- Walk as if you know where you're going, even when you don't.
- If you need to check your map, step out of the flow of people: into a shop, café or doorway, with your back to a wall.
- Plan the route before you leave, and know roughly how long it should take.
Reading the room
Notice how people around you are behaving. If a place feels wrong, you don't need to explain why. Leave, and choose somewhere busier and better lit.
